Virtual Challenge Activities

This section of the website is under development. Feel free to submit any Tracking or Survival challenges! To start, we have the following available:

1. Click Here for a Bird Call ID Challenge

2. This page: Earth Skills Self Assessment submitted by Chris Chisholm

This assessment is not a test. It is for a student's own information. Do not look up answers until after completing all the questions. It is designed to demonstrate how little anyone knows about nature and survival. It's astounding to look at again after completing the course, as a way to realize how far students have come in learning. If you don't know an answer, write "I don't know" or guess, instead of leaving it blank. Keep a record of the results by photocopying it, and placing it into your journal. When complete, research the questions (preferably together with a class), and write what you learn into your journal, just behind your unchanged "assessment".

1. Name 3 skills you could practice to help experience more wildlife when in nature:

2. Name what you think are the 3 greatest hazards in nature:

3. Name 3 navigational skills to help you find your way out of the wilderness if you were
completely lost with no compass, and with no trail in sight:

4. The most important survival skill is breathing calmly while keeping a positive attitude – panicking can kill you fastest. Think about other basic needs you might have to go without in nature that could bring serious harm or death. What could debilitate you in 3 hours, and even kill you before morning (depending on your attitude and external conditions), and what skills do you most need to reverse the situation without having prepared in advance?

What could debilitate you in 3 days, and bring death (depending on your attitude and external conditions) not too many days later, and what skills do you need to save you?

What would debilitate you beyond ability to help yourself (depending on your attitude and physical condition) and kill you sometime after that, and what skills do you need to avoid such a situation, not having prepared for it out in the wilderness?

5. Name 3 poisonous plants and describe what they might do to you:

6. Name 3 medicinal plants and describehow to process and use them:

7. Name 3 wild edible plants, describing, the parts to eat, and how to prepare them:

8. Name 3 plants out of which you can spin rope and which part of the plant is best:

9. Name 3 animal parts out of which you can spin rope:

10. Name 3 kinds of traditional hunting weapons that are fairly simple to make:

11. Name 3 kinds of uses for an animal's hide:

12. Name 3 "rodents" that probably live around your yard, school, or workplace:

13. Name 3 mammals from different families that live in the ocean:

14. Name 9 birds that visit your yard, school, or workplace:

15. Why do birds sing?

16. Why might a bird pump its tail?

17. Draw an animal track of to the correct size, including any toes, heel pads, claws, etc. Place the track into its common stride pattern, and describe what is happening:
